You don't need to fly every week to sit in business class. Most UK points collectors earn their Avios from everyday spending on the right credit card, then spend them on a long-haul seat.
1. Collect the right points
For most UK beginners, Avios or Virgin Points are the best place to start. Both are easy to earn from UK cards and offer nonstop business class from London. American Express Membership Rewards points are also useful, because they can move to several airlines, including 1:1 to Avios and Virgin.
2. Search where you'll book, not just who you'll fly
The same seat can cost different amounts depending on the programme you book through. A Qatar Airways flight can be priced differently on qatarairways.com and ba.com, so check both. Use flexible-date calendars and search each direction separately.
3. Only move points once you've found the seat
Transfers to airlines are one-way and can't be undone. Find and confirm availability first.
Example sweet spots
- Virgin Atlantic Upper Class Saver, London to New York: from around 29,000 points one-way.
- Qatar Airways Qsuite, London to Doha: around 42,500 Avios one-way off-peak.
- BA Club World London to New York with a Companion Voucher: two seats for one person's Avios (taxes paid for both).
Prices are approximate, change often and exclude taxes and fees. Always confirm the live price before transferring points. Never carry a balance on a rewards card.
